Fashion, van life and coastal vibes with Jenna Makarenko!

Fashion and van life with coastal mama Jenna Makarenko.

Introducing to our journal, one our fave mama muse Jenna!

We’ve been in awe of Jenna's chic aesthetic and we know our journal readers will too! We absolutely adore her effortless style, from home, fashion and more recently your van!

Jenna, thank you so much for being apart of the journal, we can’t wait to get to know you a little bit better! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, your family and what you love?!

Thank you so much for having me! I’m 27 years old, I have an almost 2 year old girl and I am currently 18 weeks pregnant with a little boy. I’m originally from Adelaide, but we are currently travelling Aus and have been since the start of May. My partner and I are recently engaged and are hoping to get married early 2023, if restrictions allow. I love travel, fashion and we are huge footy fans!

We love seeing all your outfit pics on Instagram! As a mama travelling around with your fam, what influences your style the most?

Being on the road, I think comfort is the most important thing for me! I love summery, flowy/oversized things, and I always try to shop pieces I will get use out of throughout my whole pregnancy and postpartum journey. That’s why I love TLC pieces so much!!

Sitting in TLC HQ on a rainy day scrolling your insta I can’t help but envy all the amazing places you are visiting! When did your van life dream start and how did you make this a reality?

We were living in Melbourne at the time and, with covid and being in lockdown for the majority of 2020, I one day walked out to the living room and said to my partner “Let’s buy a van and go traveling next year”. Jake loves travelling and had done a lot of overseas travel so he was all for a trip around Australia. It was a very spontaneous decision! We pretty much starting looking at vans straight away and, within about two months, we found a Fiat Ducato which was the perfect size for our family. We purchased that in December, packed up our apartment in Melbourne, moved to Adelaide early Feb, where we stayed at my parents’ for a few months whilst Jake did the fit out of the van. It took him about 10 weeks, and that was him working on it full time. From there we set off and have been on the road since.

What would a typical day in the life of Jenna look like?

First thing to start my day is always a coffee in the morning. We then plan what we are going to do for the day, which may include a few hours of driving. As we have stuck along the coast all of our trip, we always try to sneak in a few hours at the beach everyday. I prep dinner in the afternoon, we eat at around 5.30pm, clean up, and are generally in bed by 7 with a movie on. We have a very relaxed lifestyle at the moment, but it won’t be like this for much longer, so definitely making the most of it now!

We love checking our @lullabyclub tagged photos and seeing you rock our pieces in your own way, what is your fave TLC peice for you and little Harper?

My all time favourite TLC piece is my Lounge Set. It was my first ever purchase from TLC and it’s probably my most worn thing in my wardrobe. My favourite piece for Harper is the Mini Avalon Dress. It’s the sweetest little dress and she always gets compliments on her outfit when she wears it.

Jenna thank you so much for answering some questions and letting us into the life of @jenna.makarenko we have loved getting to know you!

Be your best sustainable self with The Zero Waste People!

How to be your best sustainable self with The Zero Waste People.

This week we welcome to the TLC journal the queen of sustainable goodies, Keele from The Zero Waste People.
At TLC, we always want to be our best sustainable selfs in all aspects of the brand, from our clothing, packaging and of course our day-to-day lives!

Reducing waste is just as important in creating a sustainable future for generations to come, and it may be even more helpful than recycling.

If everyone became more aware of them, collectively we may begin to have a positive impact on our planet and its future.

There is plastic all around us, from plastic water bottles, food containers and everything in between.

We are consuming plastic every day?! (shocking right) the average person is EATING A CREDIT CARD worth of plastic each week!

"Every year a dinner plate (100,000 tiny pieces of plastic); every decade a lifebuoy. A lifebuoy, in our bodies, every ten years. That much."

I bet you're all wondering how? The main sources are as simple as eating foods packaged in plastic, drinking out of plastic water bottles and consuming seafood.

How can we reduce the plastic we are using?

Start small and build on your changes in your own unique way.

Every little positive choice contributes to a cleaner and safer environment for

ourselves and every animal that inhabits our beautiful earth.

Don’t beat yourself up about it, just do what you can.

Start your journey and build on it. Just take a little time to really think about what you are buying. - One product at a time.

From this simple concept my business The Zero Waste People was born. My very first product grew from my desire to stop the unnecessary use of plastic disposable razors. From the old classic slightly outdated razor I created my own twist. Something that is sustainable durable but also modern and attractive to all age groups.

My favourite product at the moment is my new line of environmentally friendly silicone containers. They are leak proof, reusable, durable, freezable, microwaveable and best of all oven proof.

Straight from the freezer to the microwave to the oven! - I don’t know anything else on the market like them. The eco friendly community is loving them and so am I!

Being environmentally conscious can be challenging! When you can share your ideas and triumphs with other like minded friends within your community or social networks it's more rewarding then anything!

Remember it’s not all easy. There is lots of trial and error. Some failures, some victories. Eventually you hit the sweet spot.

Within the club we are always finding new ways to be our best and do better and be kinder to our planet. Your packages are shipped in home compostable cornstarch mailer bags and wrapped in eco friendly packaging.

Our products are designed to be cold hand washed, did you know an average washing machine cycle uses about 75 Litres of water!?

Our fabrics and linen dresses. smocks, playsuit and sets are made to order, meaning we aren’t using bulk bolts of fabric that result in wastage and excess! Any off-cuts of our fabric are repurposed into packaging within the factory.

Our individually addressed TLC cards are made from recyclable card stock.

We are always striving for ways to streamline our processes and make our pieces affordable and wearable for seasons to come.

Each one of these delicious recipes contain healthy ingredients that are loaded with important nutrients that will help promote good health and they look  sooo delish!

1. Yin Yang Cookies

Life's all about balance, and these cookies are just the treat for when you're looking to sweeten up your day. A mix of vanilla and chocolate cookies are here to hit the spot when that sweet tooth comes a-calling.

1/2 cup The Wholefood Pantry Coconut Oil (plus extra if cookie mixture is looking dry)

2 tbsp Thriving Protein Smooth Vanilla

1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl except for Lover’s Latte

2. Once combined, split your mixture in half, adding the Lover’s Latte into one of the halves, stir to combine.

3. Roll out your mixtures between two bits of baking paper until approx 1 cm thick. Press in your yin yang cookie cutter, to make your smaller circles, roll up little balls of the offcuts.

4. Assemble your cookies on a lined baking tray, and place in an oven that’s been preheated to 160C, and bake for 10 minutes, it may need 12-15 so continue cooking times if they don’t look ready yet.

5. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before taking them off your tray.

2. Warming Veggie Laksa

This easy and delicious take on a veggie laksa is quickly becoming one of our favourite winter warmers. Packed full of fresh flavours and a range of nutrient providing vegetables. Don't be surprised if this one gets added to the weekly dinner rotation.

This may look super fancy, but we promise you won't be slaving over a hot stove for too long, meaning more time to spend with Mum (win-win)!

3 eggs

125 ml Coconut Milk

1 tbsp butter

8 slices GF Banana Bread

Punnet of raspberries

Mixed berries, to serve

Sliced Almonds

1. Make your raspberry chia jam.

2. Whizz chia seeds to powder then add to a ¼ cup of water, allowing the chia to become a gel. Mash a punnet of raspberries with a fork in a small bowl and add chia gel 1 tsp at a time and mash together until you have a jam consistency (note: you will have chia gel left over, put aside and use at a later time).

3. To make your banana bread french toast place eggs, coconut milk, maple syrup and vanilla protein in a medium bowl and whisk to combine.

4. Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat and melt butter.

5. Dip banana bread slices in egg mixture, sprinkle with hemp seeds and cook for 4 minutes each side or until golden.

6. Divide toast between plates and drizzle with chia jam, top with toasted sliced almonds, extra maple syrup and fresh berries to serve.

5. Loaded Sweet Potato Boats

It’s time to set sail on the good ship Curried Lentil. You may not to be able to travel like you want to, but you can transport yourself with this flavour sensation. Soft and perfectly roasted sweet potatoes are topped with our go-to Curried Lentil Dahl, bringing a healthy alternative to your standard loaded potato. This recipe also makes extra dahl, so you’ve got tomorrow's dinner sorted too, it’s the dinner that keeps on giving.

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, crushed

1 piece of ginger (approx. 6 cm), peeled and grated

1 tbsp curry powder (adjust to taste)

1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

3/4 cup red lentils

400 g can crushed tomatoes

3/4 cup coriander, finely chopped, reserve leaves and stems for serving

400 g can coconut milk

Lime wedges to serve

4 small sweet potatoes

1 avocado, halved and sliced

1 cup red cabbage, thinly sliced

1 cup baby spinach leaves

1 tsp smoked paprika

4 tbsp natural yogurt

Olive Oil, to drizzle

2 tbsp The Wholefood Pantry Coconut Oil

3 tbsp Vegetable Broth Garden Veggie

The Wholefood Pantry Pink Himalayan Crystal Salt

2 tbsp The Wholefood Pantry Pepitas.

1. Preheat oven to 170ºC. Roast sweet potatoes whole on a baking tray for 45 minutes to 1 hr, or until cooked through. To check, stick a fork in the sweet potato, it should be soft and have no resistance.

2. Heat coconut oil in a medium saucepan on a medium heat. Add onion, stirring often, and cook for 8-10 minutes, until softened and golden brown.

3. Add garlic, ginger, curry powder, and red pepper flakes and cook for about 2 minutes, until fragrant. Add your lentils and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.

4. Add your tomatoes, coriander, and vegetable broth powder to saucepan along with 2 1/2 cups water, and a generous pinch of salt and pepper.

5. Add 3/4 of coconut milk to saucepan and stir through.

6. Bring mixture to a boil before reducing the heat and allow to simmer gently for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Your lentils should be soft, but not mushy. Taste and season with more salt and pepper if needed.

7. To serve, cut a slit in the sweet potatoes and open up with a fork. Layer in spinach and red cabbage. Top with Lentil Dahl, 1 tbsp natural yoghurt, a pinch of smoked paprika, chilli flakes, pepitas and coriander leaves.

8. Serve with extra baby spinach, 1/2 an avocado and lime, then give it a little drizzle with olive oil.
